Personal Injury And Road Accidents
Nearly 300,000 injuries are caused by car accidents every year in the UK, of which 95% are due to human error. This worrying statistic means most of us will be involved in at least one road traffic accident in our lives. If you have been unfortunate enough to be injured in a road accident because of human error, then you may be able to claim compensation for your pain and suffering.
What Can You Do?
If you have been involved in a road accident and have been injured as a result you may be able to make a personal injury claim. Whether you were the driver or a passenger, you can claim for a number of grievances, from bruising and whiplash to spinal injuries or a fatality. Motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists are also entitled to make a claim for injuries sustained on the road.
It must be proved, however, that the accident was either completely or partly someone else’s (or something’s) fault. To help verify that another person was responsible for your injury, it is useful at the time of the accident to take the following steps:-
- Take the details of the other person/people involved in the accident, including name, address, and telephone number;
- Take the details of the other vehicle(s) involved in the accident, including model and colour, registration number and the insurance company;
- If possible, take photos of the accident;
- If the other driver does not stop or is not covered by insurance, call the police immediately;
- If injured, seek medical assistance.
If it can be proved that accountability for the accident lies with another person, then you may be able to claim compensation for you injury. This can cover costs for private medical treatment, travel expenses, and a loss in earnings, in addition to the costs of repairing any damage done to your vehicle and a temporary replacement car.
As long as the person responsible for the accident has at least third party insurance – which is a legal requirement – then the claim is dealt with and paid for by their insurance company. If a driver does not have insurance or fails to stop, you can still make a claim but it is likely to be covered by the Motor Insurer’s Bureau.

If you are involved in a road accident, the first thing to do after seeking medical assistance is to contact your insurance company. They will record the details of the accident and take information regarding your injury, before contacting a solicitor who will help you with your personal injury claim. Alternatively, you can request a solicitors firm you would like to use.
