Fire Engine Accident

Peter, a motorcyclist, was seriously injured in a collision with a fire engine in Hove, East Sussex. We settled his claim for £280,000.00.

Peter's case was that he had entered a junction through a green traffic light and been hit by a fire engine crossing his path because the driver had ignored a red light. The numerous fire officers contradicted this, asserting they had entered the junction on a green light and it was Peter who had driven through a red light and caused the accident.

Accepting Peter's case, we first obtained a hearing at Brighton County Court in March 2007, when the judge accepted the evidence of the fire officers, therefore rejecting Peter's claim for compensation.

However, we fought on and a year later the Court of Appeal overturned the ruling of the Brighton court on the grounds that the judgement had given insufficient weight to the sequence and timing of the traffic lights.

We obtained a rehearing at which Peter’s version of events was accepted and his case won leading to his settlement of £ 280,000.00

‘It was a case of one tenacious individual taking on the establishment. Despite initially losing at trial and rigorous opposition from the lawyers acting for the fire service, we pursued the case through appeals and finally received justice for Peter.
